When you Save As should ensure the box "automatic filename extension" is
ticked (checked). If you do this you do not need to (must not?) type the
"extension" yourself. I think "extension" is the official term for what you
call "suffix" - the .odt, .doc or whatever that Windows uses to decide what
to do when you double click a file in a folder.

If that box is not ticked then you must enter the extension yourself. This
is true in my 2.4.1 so is not new to 3.x.

Note that a file without an extension might be in the correct format even
though Windows can't see that. Windows uses *only* the extension to
determine how to open a file. You can change this for an individual file by
right clicking its name and selecting Open With .... Or  just rename the
file ignoring the warning about the file possibly becoming unusable.
