Kathleen, the people who are getting your documents are probably using
some version of Microsoft Office. Until Office 2007 SP2, the formats
that OpenOffice.org uses by default (which follow the ISO standard Open
Document Format) were not recognized. As of that service pack, they are,
in theory, supported -- but MS chose to implement the standard
differently than has been done by any of the other applications that
follow that format, which are all fairly interoperable with each other,
but not with Office 2007 SP2.
Your best bet is to use File > Save As and select an older MS format,
like the one for XP -- or you can use File > Send > E-mail as Microsoft
Word (or Excel, or PowerPoint, where applicable). There is a free viewer
that Microsoft provides if you want to see how the document will look,
at least on some versions of Word. There are sometimes a few differences
that show up with complex documents when they are translated between
formats.
Actually, it would be even better to use File > Export as PDF, if they
don't need to edit or do keyword searches. That way, they'd see the
document as you intended.
