Many of them place the resumes into a database, which they then search for qualifications. I have had interviews, where I could see my resume in front of the interviewer and it looked nothing like what I had submitted, because it was pulled from the database and not just a print out of what I had submitted. If you submit a resume in a form the employer or recruiter is not prepared to handle, it may be discarded without consideration. Also, if you submit your resume via a web site, it will tell you acceptable formats, which are usually .DOC or plain text.
