Pete,

This won't be any help, but I tried opening it in OOo 2.0 on SuSE 9.3. OOo would start to open the file and I could see the start of it, but OOo would then lock up on me. Trying to let the document recovery work would also lock up OOo with the file in the list (hmm...and OOo did not give me an option to deselect it for document recovery). I looked into the file using my archive viewer and noticed DL.zip and a layout-cache file in there that I did not have in one of my own files I opened for comparison. I deleted those from the file, but still got the same result - OOo lockup.

I looked at manifest.xml and it still included references to the pics. I tried removing those, but no luck.

Perhaps someone else can figure out what is going on.

Windows XP SP2.

I created a rather large file with embedded pictures and saved it.

Now when I try to open it, OO hangs and I get a "Not Responding" in Task Manager.

I opened the ODT file and deleted all of the pictures (reducing the size to under 20K) but the only effect that had was to give me an error message about missing pictures!

The file is on-line at <http://www.mccc.edu/pjh/OOo/DL.odt> If anyone can help me out here, I'd be much obliged.

Thanks.

I am using OpenOffice 2.0.1 under Windows XP.

I downloaded the file DL.odt and attempted to open by clicking. OpenOffice hung.

After removing OpenOffice from memory and restarting it, I then attempted to open the file from within OpenOffice Writer. OpenOffice hung.

After removing OpenOffice from memory and restarting it, I then attempted to open the file from within OpenOffice Writer, selecting "Read-only" in the Open dialogue box. The file opened without a problem. I scrolled through it without a problem.

I saved the file as DL2.odt. This new file DL2.odt opens perfectly by clicking on its icon or from within OpenOffice Writer. Whatever was causing the problem has been fixed.

From this experience it appears that good general advice might be that if you have any difficulty opening a file in OpenOffice, try opening it as "Read-only".
