You don't need to convert any documents. OpenOffice will happily open almost all MS Office documents. You may find some peculiarities with very complex documents not looking quite the same as they did in Word but it's quite rare.

When you installed OpenOffice you were offered the choice of making it the "default" program for .doc (Word), .xls (Excel) and .ppt (Powerpoint)files. If you said yes to that then double clicking a Word document will open it in Writer.

If you said no then:
Right click a Word document. Choose "Open with". Choose OpenOffice from the list of suggestions. If Openoffice isn't in the list, use the Browse button to find it ("soffice.exe" in the "program" folder within whichever folder you installed OO). If you like you can make this permanent by selecting the "Always use this program" box before clicking OK.

The same applies for Excel and for Powerpoint files. Just tell Windows to open them with OpenOffice.

The only thing you have to watch is that although OO can open MS documents, the converse is not true. So, if you want to send documents you have made with OO to MS users you must use "Save as" or "Send as" and then choose Word or Excel or ... format.
