2007/3/27, monica karpinski <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Hi I am using OpenOffice for Word Processing, and have saved my files, in
what I thought was MicroSoft Word.
I sent my resume to a friend to look over and she was not able to open the
file with a message appearing as such:

You should only open attachments from a trustworthy source. Attachment:
Monica_Karpinski_Resume_1.odt from Hi-Message (HTML)
Would you like to open the file or save to your computer?

I tried Word a few other applications but it either doesn't come up
because it is not supported or is just a jumble or letters and symbols.

She also commented that she tried a few other applications and did n't
come up because, and you can see why. I am attaching the document in hopes
that you can maybe tell more, by openig the document yourself, as to what I
did wrong. Can you please help me with this, or maybe tell me what is the
problem?
I am etremely worried as I am in the process of looking for a job, and
this is the only place I have my resume saved.

thank you!

Hello Monica

I had no problem opening your file in OpenOffice.org. If your friend can't
read the file, it is because you saved it as an OpenOffice.org file, i.e.
with .odt extension.
Most people -unfortunately- will not be able to read it in this format, but
OOo can also save in M$ Word format. All you have to do is chose File > Save
As, then select Microsoft Word 97 / 2000 / XP (.doc) in the Document Type
droplist. Don't forget to check "automatic file name extension" (so OOo will
put .doc after the name you give to the file). You now save a copy of your
resume in .doc format that can be read by all people using Word.
Alternatively, you can save in Portable Document Format (pdf). The lay-out
and content of your resume stay as you want them to be, and anybody can see
the content of your resume (Acrobat Reader is a free download, other
pdf-readers are also available).

HTH and success with your job search!
