Hi I am using OpenOffice for Word Processing, and have saved my files, in
what I thought was  MicroSoft Word.
I sent my resume to a friend to look over and she was not able to open the
file with a message appearing as such:

If the attachment is what you sent, then it is not in MS office
format. The .odt at the end tells you that you saved the document in
OpenOffice native format.

You could use file > send > document as MS Word to achieve what your after.
