That's my problem. I did save in Word .doc format, but PDF-convert works by
adding a toolbar to Word, but it doesn't add a toolbar to OO Writer.

OpenOffice will allow you to save your document in Word format. Choose
File>Save As. Select the appropriate Word format from the "Save as type:"
list. Ensure the "Automatic file name extension" box is ticked/checked.

Having saved the document in Word format you can (??) use PDF-Convert ...
