Since you can open the Word document when you save it to disk, it is not a "docx" file.

Find a MS Word doc on your computer. Ctrl-Click on it. Click on "Get Info". On the panel that opens look for "Open with:". Select OpenOffice.org if it is listed or click other and find OOo in your applications folder. Then under the heading "Use this application to open all documents like this" click "Change All". All .doc files should now open with OO.o when you click on them.
