For whatever it's worth - a few observations:

A new thread is not a reply. A reply responds to something already
said, usually by someone else. Including the statement being
responded to prior to the response helps insure that the discussion
is understandable by those reading the posts and in fact (from my
experience with at least 15 lists over 14 years), this is the stated
norm on most if not all lists - discussion groups generally
discourage or forbid top posting, based on convention, logic and
policy, since Lists also have List Owners and often, Moderators.
They frequently have rules regarding posting, also - and on most
lists I know, moderators ask those having top posted to refrain from
doing so in the future.

(This is not a top post for the simple reason that I erased the
previous interchange and changed the subject. since I am loathe
to further either the chit chat or the ill will, striving instead
to provide a definitive, well grounded, one time response).

Regarding OO and Linux: OO was developed by Sun and Sun's work
stations don't run MS Windows (at least natively).  IOW, OO is in
it's element with Linux.
