You'll have to save in Word format.  You can do this in Save as, by
selecting Word from the drop down list or simply click on File > Send >
E-mail as Microsoft Word.  Also, if the recipient is not expected to
edit the file, you can also export or send as a PDF file.

paintered64 might also want to consider using .rtf format, depending on the version of Works run by his correspondents.
