OpenOffice does not charge for anything. You paid someone who decided to charge you for something you can get for free from www.openoffice.org. I've often included images in text documents and it didn't cost me anything. Who did you pay for it? And do they actually charge more for including pictures? As for including images in Writer, you simply click on "Insert > Picture" and chose your source. As I mentioned, OpenOffice is always free from www.openoffice.org.
