You have probably already tried the two suggestions below, but they
may be useful as general reference for similar cases in the future:
1) From what you wrote I understand that they don't simply send Word
attachments, they write the actual text of the email as a Word
file. If so, let them know that sending an email which is just an
empty body with a Word (or even OpenDocument) file attached is
a) very, very rude, since the receiver has to pay much much
more to read the message if he or she has a metered
connection
b) very stupid and uneffective because messages like that
are often automatically discarded by many anti-virus email
scanners
both reasons are valid regardless of what you want or don't want to
use
2) Any environmental club should be one of the last places to adopt
and support Microsoft software, see the links in the "Environment"
paragraph at http://digifreedom.net/node/103 (it may even be
interesting to challenge them with those arguments publicly, on the
University newspaper or something)
Do these guys have an English website, by the way? I'm curious.
