As long as they send .doc until September, when OO.o
v3.0 is due to be released with Office 07
capabilities, I don't see that it matters that much.  

Generally, people sending out newsletters want other
people to read them, so they will likely stick with
.doc until a large majority of computer users have
Office 07 or OO.o 3.0 or higher.  Of course, text
files are most universal - anyone can read them, and
anyone can write them with vi or some other text
editor supplied with your OS of choice.
