If the teacher is demanding 2003.doc then save as standard 'Microsoft
Word 97/2000/XP (.doc)' format (don't forget to have 'Automatic file
name extension' checked). My guess would be that, unless the class is on
word processings formats, the teacher won't know the difference and only
knows that her version of Word is 2003.

On the other hand, if the teacher is demanding 2003.xml and you are
having problems, make sure that when you do a Save As that 'Automatic
file name extension' is checked and that you are not just simply saving
as an odt and adding the xml extension yourself.

I'd also recommend that under Tools|Options|Load/Save|Microsoft Office -
you check all L & S boxes. These provide some additional coversions for
OLE objects (see Help|Load/Save|Microsoft Office).
