Fair enough. There are also lots of other specialized programs that don’t have Linux programs that work reliably or as well as corresponding Windows programs, or don’t exist outside the Windows/Macintosh world. We looked into switching to Linux in the business I worked for about three years ago. It seemed that the best we could do is a partial switch, which would give us the hassle of having to deal with two operating systems. So we didn’t do it. (I was inclined to try anyway, but I don’t make that kind of decision.)

I think replacing the operating system because you can't solve a problem in
only ten minutes is very much a cop-out.

You realize that SOP for Deel support is to tell a customer to
reformat their hard drive, and reinstall their OS, if they can't fix
the issue in ten minuets, don't you?

No I didn’t. I’ve never heard of “Sop for Deel” before. If you mean “SOP for Dell” (which I also do not recall hearing about, perhaps because I don't own a Dell and we don’t happen to have them in our workplace, except for one very old machine), a search in Google only turns up 4 references.

One of them states “Changing the OS doesn't void the warranty. However, you cannot ask for support if u have changed the OS from wat was originally shipped wid the system. The Tech Support will ask you to restore the original OS before proceeding wid troubleshooting. This is the SOP for Dell, HP and Toshiba AFAIK (100% sure about HP).”

So according to this it would seem the policy is to restore the original operating system, not Linux, unless the original system was Linux. This seems to me a reasonable policy, if you are talking about warranty service. If course, maybe this doesn’t apply to SOP for Dell any more.

I stopped because people don't use the languages the way I do. The
issues with Vista re languages are _worse_ than I described.

I don’t recall that you ever described the supposed language problems coherently or pointed out even a single place on the web that indicated any problems with language support. Maybe I missed that.

Nor do I recall reading about single OOo problem about language that wasn’t OOo related, mostly the user not understanding how OOo handles languages and or the user not understanding spell checking and so forth.

So provide reliable web source now that supports your belief in gross language problems under Vista or provide a link to your original post where you indicated the problems clearly. Surely at least one other person who uses the languages the way you do (whatever way that may be) has spotted these gross problems and reported them clearly on the web somewhere. You are surely not claiming that you alone use languages in a particular way that no-one else does?

The one problem I have noticed, and others have noticed, both in Vista and XP (and maybe before), is that the language-change toolbar is rather erratic, tends to shift its settings, and on some systems disappears at times. I think there are fixes for this, but I haven’t bothered to look for it, because I don’t use other languages enough and my toolbar has never disappeared though it is erratic.

This is a genuine bug.

But I did not gather that this was what you were talking about.
