You don't say what OS you're using; I assume windows? 'custom' install is indeed the way to pick the target directory. I've had no fundamental problem with picking components to install - although the selection method may not be immediately clear, it does work. The default set is reasonable anyway, certainly for trying it out. You give no clue about what the "serious problem" might be....
