Not sure what forum signup you refer to. This is an email list "[email protected]" where users gather to help one another. Certainly not XP (or anything else) specific! > > Yes, it is the total obscurity of the selection method that stopped me. > Nevertheless, I just went through the custom install and tried my best to > select everything. I cannot find any programs. It has not created icons, That's odd. Firstly, you should have a file something like OOo_2.4.1_Win32Intel_install_wJRE_en-US.exe, size around 127Mb, preferably obtained from www.openoffice.org. You run this, and it unpacks to a folder defaulting to desktop. (You can delete this folder when done). When it's unpacked itself, it starts the installation proper, and if you select custom install (and my apologies here - as I already have it installed, I see a slightly different sequence of dialogues) you should end up with a dialogue labelled "custom setup" with a tree structure to the left showing disk-drive icons with labels like "OpenOffice.org Writer" and to the right a box with some explanation of each feature. You can expand the tree by clicking on the [+] symbols; clicking on the /name/ will show a brief explanation of what's selected; clicking on the icon will show a drop-down menu allowing a choice of "don't install this", "install this", "install this and all sub-features". As I think I mentioned, the default set will give everything for trying it out. As part of the install, you'll be asked if OOo should be the default to open various Office files. If you have Office installed, you should probably say no to this. When it's finished installing, you won't see any program icons on the desktop - they'll be in the start menu. Copy to desktop if you wish. > it does not open Word files as I specified, I can find no help files and > I can find no program files. The alleged size of the installed program is When you say "no program files", do you just mean desktop icons? Is the program installed where you asked (possibly C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org.........) > 34 mb with an additional 13 mb for options. This seems too small to me. > The actuall size of everything it installed is about 339 mb (339,226,947 > bytes). Alleged? Where do you see the 34Mb figure? It does look rather low! Check as above. > > I am completely baffled by this.
