Mike, I put out a similar question on a forum where I think my comment
about xp applies. My bad, I was frazzled and baffled and forgot that the
ground rules for the email list are not xp specific. Sorry about that!
I want you to know that I greatly appreciate your help because you are
really trying to address my questions and are actually getting pretty
close to where my issues are.
Let me respond directly to your comments:
Regarding file types, in trying ooo, I have tried to set ooo to open ms
files. I can always change that setting later, but for now, I really want
to get some experience using ooo on the documents I am working on.
Unfortunately, as I said earlier, ooo does not open with the specified
file types and I don't think the ooo programs even were installed.

"You can expand the tree by clicking on the [+] symbols; clicking on the
/name/ will show a brief explanation of what's selected; clicking on the
icon will show a drop-down menu allowing a choice of "don't install
this", "install this", "install this and all sub-features"."
This is the part that was problematic for me. The two root entries are
"Open Office.org Program Modules" and "Optional Components". After a
period of confusion and doubt, I took this at its word, selecting "This
feature, and all sub-features will be installed on local hard drive" for
both root entries.
All along, I have had a nagging feeling that this would leave out some
sub-features, sub sub-features, etc. Every other tree like this I have
ever seen has check boxes which are set up so that checking an entry
automatically causes all sub entries to be checked and this is displayed
when the tree is expanded (even after selecting a root entry).
As I said, the result of what I did is an installation in which no icons
were created, in which I can find no program files or help files, and
which does not open the file types I specified at installation.
That's about all she wrote. Any ideas?

It sounds as if you got into the custom install dialogs, and afterwards
don't see anything on your desktop. What you should end up with is a
folder in your Start menu for OOo, with icons there for each of the
applications, and the actual programs (swriter.exe, scalc.exe, and so
on) are normally in the C:\Program Files\ OpenOffice.org x.y\Program
directory, where x.y is the particular OOo version. Do you not have
anything in the Start menu? If you don't, there was probably no normal
installation completion. I don't know what (if anything) you actually
tried to customize, but you might try a search for swriter.exe to see if
any programs were actually installed.
If so, this will tell you what to use in the "Open With" dialog for each
of the MS Office filetypes, selecting the option of always using it if
that's what you want as the default.
If not, and you still have the original dowloaded file, you might try
double-clicking it again and this time accept the default installation.
Part of that should give you the choice to use OOo for MS Office
filetypes. It may say something about replacing or repairing an existing
installation, and you probably want to replace.
