Hello, I'm in need of help with Open Office. I just downloaded Open

It sounds like you're looking in the installation folder that's usually
located on the desktop. After downloading OpenOffice, from

Sorry for this off topic thing, but WHY are people ALWAYS asking this
question? Is it really so hard to figure out how to install it? Is there something that can be done to avoid this happening all the time? I am only
asking, becasue I don't really know.

Is installation of OpenOffice.org (for Windows I guess) particularly hard to understand or is it the same problem with other software? If not, what did they do to make their users understand exactly what to do with what they
just are just about to download?

There is a problem in that OOo is the only (windows) software that I know of that leaves its unpacked installation stuff around after the actual install. Worse, it leaves it on the desktop, where a lot of people expect an icon to be to start the installed program.

So what do they do? They double-click on the folder, and instead of a brand spanking new WP, they get a maze of incomprehensible files and folders. Anyone who's half-way computer literate will see what's going on; newbies probably won't.

So yes. It is IMO a problem with OOo.

I agree, the installation filer should be removed from the desktop after installation. I don't think that windows-users are illiterate (I'm one myself), but when you look at most computereducation today it's actually windowseducation. More and more people have no experience of windows and computers before XP, and are used to that everything is done pr automatic. In XP and Wista the OS have taken over more and more control over the computer, you have to use the computer in the way that Microsoft have decided is best for you. This is - I think - even the reason for another complain that is often seen here; "OOo have converted / corrupted my Word-files". >From XP the file-extensions is not shown by default, and many don't even know what it is, and what the icons means. Maybe it could be stated on the downloadside - Just under the button - that Windows-users should remove the unpackingfolder from the desktop.

I think it would be better if the unpacking of the installation files were put in a temporary folder. and on the desktop put a program launch icon.

Just my 2 cents worth.
