I think that most of those who wants icons on the desktop are beginners, while we who want a clean desktop are more experienced users. Since we are experience, we can easily remove or just move the desktop icons to where ever we want while those who are not so experienced maybe are grateful for having them served right at fron of them. So I don't think that would be a big problem, but that's maybe only what I think.
I agree totally. I think the default should be to put an icon on the desktop, with a choice not to. As Johnny says, novice users have come to expect that a new program will have an icon on the desktop once it installs. It can be confusing when there isn't even an option to have that done. Experienced users, who don't want icons, can easily delete them.
