I agree totally. I think the default should be to put an icon on the desktop, with a choice not to. As Johnny says, novice users have come to expect that a new program will have an icon on the desktop once it installs. It can be confusing when there isn't even an option to have that done. Experienced users, who don't want icons, can easily delete them.
