Martin,
You're assuming that the UK customer base do not want imperial (even in
parenthesis).
Whether viewed as good or bad it is a fact that the average UK customer may
size up his requirements in either imperial or metric, and a quick 'listen
in' on the conversations between customer and salesman in any shop of that
sort quickly identifies this.
MFI's instruction is to "choose either imperial or metric throughout".
Another (more 'posh') German firm supplies a sheet with a scale to draw your
room plans on and one side it imperial, the other metric.
I know this because I have recently had both my bathroom and master bedroom
completely re-furbished and there is a mix of imperial and metric
throughout.

I visited www.ikea.com. It was an untidy mess of metric and imperial. I
then visited www.ikea.co.uk. It was all metric. I guess that Ikea is
playing to its customer base.
