Well, I've been quiet on this subject for a long time but ..........
Personally, I feel the Cobra pipes get a bad rap. The Cobra pipes have a
number of advantages (none of which relate to horse power):
1) Most will agree that they are the best looking pipes on the Vmax. They
not only maintain the dual exhaust, you get 4 pipes sticking out the rear.
2) They maintain the cruiser look and you don't have a can hanging on the
side like a sport bike.
3) They are lighter than a stock exhaust system.
4) They are chrome (no need to polish, etc.)
5) They don't turn gold like stainless systems.
6) They are made from heavy steel. They don't dent like Supertrapps,
aluminum cans, or the stock system.
7) They don't have any packing material in them that burns away and needs
replacing.
8) Cost less than $400 and are real easy to install.
9) They sound great but are not so loud that you have the neighbors calling
the cops on you.
True, they definitely don't increase the horse power but I suspect that a
properly jetted and tuned bike with Cobra pipes will come close to stock
horse power. This would seem to be true by looking at the recent dyno shoot
out results:

To me, the above indicates that with the stock exhaust or slip-ons, whether
the bike is "in tune" makes the biggest difference. Not the pipes.
Believe it not, there are some of us Max owners that are not concerned with
"ultimate" horse power. If I were, I wouldn't ride a Vmax. Don't get me
wrong, I'm not trying to convert anyone or say anything negative about
anyone who runs a Hindle, Kirker, etc. They are great pipes and each has
their own list of positive points. I mainly just wanted to let any Cobra
owners out there know that there are others who like their Cobra pipes.
If you're not familiar with what the Cobra pipes look like, you can see them
on my bike at:
