My bike is a 99 max with 43mm forks. The R1 calipers
WILL NOT fit the earlier smaller forks without
fabrication of mounting brackets and possibly some
machining. I know this for sure because a friend of
mine has an 85 max that we measured for the R1
calipers a short while ago. As you probably know the
earlier bikes used the same calipers on the front as
is used on the rear of the later (all?) maxs. He
managed to pick up a set of used later forks and
triples at a salvage yard that solved the problem and
was then able to fit the R1 calipers.
