I am a hydraulic field service engineer and just would like to mention
simple facts that affect sender and receiver in a simple hydraulic system.
Lets make it simple so there are no doubts, the more fluid you pump into the
braking system from a single source such as the hand lever piston, the more
difficult it is to achieve greater hydraulic pressure since the pressure
builds from a manual lever and that lever is hand operated and the pressure
exerted to the lever is limited to your strength. Let's call the master
cylinder a pump that can supply "x" amount of fluid into the caliper as you
press the grip. The more volume displaced the less pressure you can achieve.
It has a lot to do with ratio, same as in the gearbox, in first gear the
motor has a terrific torque arm to use while in fifth gear the torque is
gone devoted to producing speed (flow in the hydraulic system).
The best ratio is when you can fill the gap between rotor and pads
immediately and on the other hand be able to exert maximum pressure on the
pads to get a good braking system. Right now in my case, with R1 calipers
and standard max master cylinder I pump too much and have limited power to
brake. if I can get a smaller master cylinder that pumps less fluid I will
achieve more final pressure with less effort from my hand. I guess that's
what Sam achieved with his brother's master cylinder............
