Thomas you will improve the braking very significantly with HH pads. You should
not run with stock R1 or EBC Kevlars. The HH's will impress you, it's night and
day.
I know everyone's canning the R1 deal but frankly with the HH pads they work as
well as the stock late model Max ones fitted also with HH pads. Personally I
believe mine works slightly better, in terms of feel, progressive pulling up
power and hard braking. Where they appear to be slightly lacking is in the
effort required under fairly heavy braking, but in my opinion no more (probably
less) than the OEM Max brakes with the HH pads.
I know this is a bit subjective and not very scientific but I believe I'm not
way off. I'm still tempted to try the XJR-1300 master cylinder which has a
smaller bore.
Incidentally, the discs (rotors) are identical on both bikes, 298mm diameter,
and 5mm thickness.
So even if the lever moves a little more with the XJR master but the braking
effort is closer to the XJR's (very little effort, even in hard braking) that
will still make the improvement very dramatic over stock late model Max brakes.
The XJR also has more lever movement than the Max has now with stock master,
the difference is you start to feel the braking effect come on twice as strong
when the initial travel is taken up, and with much less effort.
I priced the XJR master cylinder, lever (fully adjustable type) and bolt. All
these are about $230.00 Australian or $140.00 U.S. I will steal the one off my
brothers bike to try, if it works it will stay there and I'll fit the new one
to his bike. The stock mirror will also bolt right up, it's 10mm like most of
the Yamaha ones.
I'll let you know what happens if this damn rain ever stops.
