This is a very cynical perspective but I'm afraid there's some truth to what you say. In fact, this is part of why free/open source software and open standards are so important - it helps to put the power back in the hands of the people actually doing the work and rests control away from those who would seek to exploit this work for short term gain at the expense of the greater good. > > Also, lets get real. As a small business owner (four employees) and someone who cares very much about free/open source software and open standards, I think that VAGUE is very relevant. Granted, our business is tiny and probably not representative of "local mainstream business." I will add, however, that you are only as relevant as you make yourself. > > Until, or if ever, we decide to get seriously as an advocacy group and > create the > chanells that can effectively reach-out and demonstrate viable alternatives > we will remain > a parliment of crows; a happy group that sits on the high-wires watching > traffic below > and scooping up road-kill. I think this would be a great idea. Businesses need to hear about why FOSS and open standards are important to them. It's probably not even something that most businesses have given any consideration to, so basic education here could go a long way.
