This has got to be one of the worst things in VASSAL. The method you describe sounds good, and I'm sure I'll use that at some point in the future. My problem, which I didn't make clear, is I'm using a graphic from a published game. So the map is set, has a grid, and hex numbers.
I very nearly gave it up all together. My feeling is that having the hex grid was a bonus in this case, not a requirement. I just wanted to get the reporting and 'snap' functions. However, after a little more fiddling it fell into place. Still, it would be nice if we could set a couple points of the hex, or maybe click to set one point and then drag the hex to the correct size and position and have VASSAL fill in the rest of the grid.
