?? what "extension pack which comes with the Ubuntu installation"?  If
there had been an obvious one I would have used it.  There's the Guest
Additions but that's not the same thing as the Extension Pack.

This is the whole problem, there's no 'proper' (as in via the Ubuntu or
anyone else's repository) way to install the Extension Pack, it seems to
be only possible to do by bypassing the proper channels.

I use the specific Oracle Ubuntu repository source for getting
virtualbox:- 
    deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian oneiric contrib

but there's no Extension Pack there.
