Thanks for the helpful response. I was wanting to make a backup of the VM
since I was going to try to expand its size and didn't want to lose it if
something went wrong. Why the file locking happened I haven't a clue. I
understand regarding the cloning process and have done that. The backups,
which were just straight file copies, I did to another drive worked fine
since I had the VM and the VBox itself shutdown. All I can guess is somehow
the VBox manager sensed that I did something it didn't know about and got
really upset and locked the VM from running. Deleting everything in the VM
directory, rebooting, deleting the remaining files that had been locked and
restoring from the backup drive cleared the issue.

I've gotten the VM disk size increased and just have to get the NTFS file
system expanded to access the additional space.
