@John a better explanation, or use case, of USB pass-through that I've used
in the past, is to connect USB devices such as printers, or other
specialized hardware that cannot be used on the host, or is desired to use
in the guest.

For example, one of my clients is a physician, and she uses a specialized
medical device for treating her patients, and the drivers and software
needed to run it does not work under 64-bit Windows. What I did is set up a
VirtualBox VM with Windows XP 32-bit inside, set up USB pass-through for
the device, and shared folders for documents, data files and reports to
transfer through to the host OS. As far as I know, the Shared Folders are
not literally "shared" on a network, it's an abstraction that multiple OSes
can handle, after installing the Guest Additions.

Another advantage of shared folders over a flash drive is that you're not
limited to the USB device's I/O performance limitations. In addition, the
USB pass-through feature is not available in VirtualBox OSS, only under the
PUEL or otherwise licensed VirtualBox. I don't know if the latter applies
to you.

Now if you're trying to copy to another host, OUTSIDE of the virtual
machine, perhaps using the OS file sharing capabilities would be better
suited to your needs.

Had the shared folders capability not been offered, I could understand why
this would be a useful task.
