That was what I thought, but apparently it caused some file locking. Tried to
start the VM using VBoxManager and was able to see the locking errors. I
eventually deleted everything in the VM directory, rebooted the machine and
restored from the backup drive and all was well. I guess the issue was that
the VM Manager GUI was still open even though the VM itself was not running.

I did that so that backup data was ok, but there was still the locking issue
mentioned above.

It was just my attempt to get a new link to the VM in the hope it would fix
what ever it was unhappy about.
