Yes, you're right my comment was too broad, I meant "all other cables I have tried were junk". I dont mean to imply FTDI are the only good ones... just the only good ones I know about. But it was cables with Prolific chipset the ones that made me go through "drivers hell" on Windows machines. Prolific says on its web page that there are copied versions of its chip set, and that because of that newer drivers detect "fake" ones and refuse to work. " Warning Notice: Please be warned that counterfeit (fake) PL-2303HX (Chip Rev A) USB to Serial Controller ICs using our name, and device drivers, were being sold in the China market. Counterfeit IC products show exactly the same outside chip markings but generally are of poor quality and causes Windows driver compatibility issues (Yellow Mark Error Code 10). We issue this warning to all our customers and consumers to avoid confusion and false purchase." Well, if a company cant protect its IP or fight knock-offs being sold in the open market, and not a dark street corner, it s certainly a firm I dont want to do business with. "Avoid confusion and false purchase"... the nerve of this people! how am I supposed to know? Have they heard about holograms? (like some Taiwanese wifi vendors implemented), or codes I could enter on its web site to check?). They say nothing about that, so I guess you buy a Prolific cable and you mightas well flip a coin to know if it s legit or fake. They cant even speak English for Gods sake. What is a false purchase? a purchase made by con men, that doesnt actually happen? a visual trick?.... ohh they meant "avoid confusion and the purchas of a false unit"... now I get it. see also http://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/40343/using-max232-to-fix-prolific-usb-to-serial-voltage-levels I dont know if that was the cause, but most of the Made in China USB rs232 cables available for cheap down here have a Prolific chipset inside. I had to go to great lengths to find ones with FTDI chipset, and the difference was day and night, flawless operation from minute one with FTDI. Drivers hell with Prolific. My suggestion remains, unless you buy something with a "known good" chipset like FTDI, chances are, you are asking yourself for trouble. I hope you dont work for Prolific or one of its distributors and felt offended, but thats my experience. If you ever visit Argentina and drop by you can have the 4 or 5 JUNK CABLES that are taking space in my drawer.
