If you are an AVA member, read the summer 2006 journal article by Ann
Earhart, MSN. She tracked CRBSI rates of PICCs at their skilled nursing
facility and found a relatively low rate of infections. They did
surveillance and found non-compliance with certain aspects of the dressing
changes including some that had not been done at the 24 hour mark (some were
not done for days). I think if you find that there is little drainage at
the 24 hour mark, then adding Biopatch at the time you complete the PICC
line insertion, and leaving it til the following week for the weekly
dressing change makes a lot of sense. Read Ann's article. Very well done
and compelling evidence for moving to this change in procedure.
We're still doing some data collection and will likely move to this by next
winter.

Was wondering if everyone is still doing 24 hour drsg. changes if you place
a biopatch immediately after placement of PICC/ML. Of course if there is
no bleeding.
Are you placing pressure drsg on outside of sterile drsg? 2x2's and
coban?
Thanks!
