Wes: Just a cpl quick answers as I'm heading out the door to take my wife to
the hospital. You can google this but I use foam, spun deer hair and my
favorite, balsa wood (bought at Hobby Lobby, Michaels etc) for the bodies..I
use rubber legs through the sides, and either rubber legs, hair, and/or marabou
for the tails. I glue on doll eyes most of the time. On fishing them, cast them
out. When they hit, leave it alone till all the ripples stop. Most ppl start
working the popper tooo soon after it has landed on the water. You'll usually
get a hit right when you think it has been in the water too long. After all
ripples have died down, give it a 6-12 inch strip/twitch, then let it sit,
again, till the ripples disappear. Keep doing this till you get a hit. I try to
cast them UNDER over hanging trees and bushes, or around cover like lily pads,
fallen trees etc. On color, even if I paint the popper black, i paint the
"face" of the poppers white or yellow so I can see it at all times. Color is up
to the fish, but I use light colors in clear water, and dark colors on dark or
stained waters.. HTH, Chuck

  Subject: [VFB] Popper help needed

  Hi VFB,

I am getting curious about fly rod poppers, used for trout fishing. For that
purpose, I would like to tie a number of small poppers. Since that is not my
normal mode of fishing, I am wondering if any of you who use poppers
extensively have strong feelings about how a popper should be designed?(shape,
balance, materials, colors, whatever?)

Are there any good web site references to making poppers?

Any coaching on how to effectively fish a popper?

  Thanks,
  Wes Wada
