Knowing Syl, I can relate to what you are saying.
I used to fish a trailer ( dropper) fly behind a bass bug for bass. Most fish were 
taken in the trailer fly and a lot of double hookups with a bass on the trailer and a 
big sunfish on the Popper. I will admit, some of the fish on the trailer were foul 
hooked. It seems that the bass come up to slap the popper and hooked themselves on the 
trailer.
I have not used a dropper for trout fishing so I can't tell you anything about that. I 
have had some foul hooked trout on a single fly. They are usually hooked just in front 
of the dorsal fin or in the tail.
