DOYLE,
I guess you are talking about the 80501BL hooks. They are great hooks, my favorite for tying California Steelhead Classic wetflies on....thought I do tye current favorites on them as well. If you have a copy of Terry Helleckson's FISH FLIES, Vol.#2 you will see agreat many of the Steelhead patterns in the colour plates are tyed on them. For the Life of me I do not know why they were not embraced better by the Steelhead community....i guess that Up eye, Japanned Black hooks are the set in concrete rule for the majority of Tyers. I've sent afew to Bob Haering & haven't heard any complaints so he must like them as well
Besides Steelhead patterns, the Smaller sizes-#6 thru #10 work great for tying heavy duty Stonefly nymphs on. Or tying larger hares ear, Prince & Zug Bugs on...gives the pattern a very "Regal" look....
If your able to locate any in your local shops i strongly recommend buy up the sizes you need & all they have of that size.... They are no longer made.
I talked with the Mustad rep at Marriots Fly Fair last weekend about why they no longer made them, was told that they didn't sell that well.. Thought they offer a Down eyed Salmon/Steelhead hook now that basically looks likes a shorter shank version of the ever lovin' Eagle Claw 1197B.... Your basic "Heavy Metal" hook that King Salmon cannot straighten out. I'm interested in seeing if this new Mustad hook holds up as well....it's in the New "Signature Series".....
I purchased Tony Spezio's remaining stock of 1197B & 1197G hooks...I'm set up well now for those Hooks....trying to get set up well with the Mustad 80501BL hooks now....

Dean, that was a superb letter on hooks and I will certainly look for some of those Mustad hooks where ever I am near a fly shop. Thank you for all the really wonderful posts you send......Doyle
