I learned to hand-finish from my Skip Morris book. I got a Matarelli finisher with my tools and had no idea what it was, seriously. About a year later, I was looking around at some beginner lessons on FAOL and found a tutorial on using the tool. That night I sat down to watch Monday Night Football with my vise, a #2 hook, bobbin of thread and the whip finisher. I sat and did whip finishes during commercials and had it whipped (AAAAARG) by game's end. It's nice to be able to do both just in case.

Dang, Murph. I have "huge hands" and no problems hand whipping. But I couldn't use a Mata - Zetti if my life depended on it. Ring finger is size 14. I know, I know, dangit! Your's is probably at least a 16 - always got to go me one better. Hope you make it to Sowbug, so we can see who's really the tuffest.. :-P

While I find hand whipping much faster, I am "blessed" with dry, often calloused large hands. If I am to whip by hand, I need hand lotion and a bit of sandpaper first or I tear the thread. I use a Matterelli or Renzetti (are these guys Italian?) most of the time. I don't quite use them exactly as advised, but the heads are coming out much better since using variations of the directions.
