John, I tie my own leaders too.
sometimes I use a formula or table like leaderCalc sometimes I guess only. Main principle it to have a longer butt side of the leader (connected to the fly line). This is made from one piece of mono. The second section has to increase the speed of the fly during the last roll. It consists of several shorter pieces of mono, tapering down. Last section is for the snowflake effect, to let the fly land like a ... One longer piece of thin matching mono. For the butt section I use some cheapo stuff, the second section of smooth stuff and the tip section of the best material I can get. Don't mix nylon and fluocarbon. The leader are connected with the loop to loop technic to flyline and tippet. Sometimes I use the bood knot sometimes surgeon's knot. The last is used when repairing on streamside. I was thinking about getting the umpqua leader building kit, or just buying spools of the sizes I need. If you just buy the sizes like say I want to buy .021 for a butt section, do I still just buy leader/tippet material or am i gettign into a different leader material? > >john ridderbos >
