Being somewhat gadget minded, I enjoy getting out my micrometer and playing with it.  you are right, I can pretty well guess the size - if I have something else to compare it to.  For example, if I have two spools of material I can look at the label and immediately tell one from the other.  Also, I can pretty much tell the difference between  06X and 6X.  But, the difference between 4x and 5x or 5x and 6x - unless they are side by side - still eludes me.   Great idea, though.  Begin testing myself.
