Being somewhat gadget minded, I enjoy getting out my micrometer and playing with it.  you are right, I can pretty well guess the size - if I have something else to compare it to.  For example, if I have two spools of material I can look at the label and immediately tell one from the other.  Also, I can pretty much tell the difference between  06X and 6X.  But, the difference between 4x and 5x or 5x and 6x - unless they are side by side - still eludes me.
 
Great idea, though.  Begin testing myself.

You will no doubt get an eye for tippet size at some point.  Try eyeing up the end and guessing.  You can be pretty accurate by holding new tippet up to the section needing an extension.
