Just a quick question, how many of you fish from a canoe?

Several, me including.

I have been
considering purchasing a canoe for some local lake fishing. Is there any
better canoes for the fishing or will any old one work just fine?

General touring canoes are best. There are a few 'sporting' canoes out there, but I would prefer a more allround boat to the wider, flatter sporting boats. Some of these even have a transom, making them rather awkward as allround boats. Mind you, good canoes (including good quality sporting boats) don't come cheap. Secondhand deals may be preferable. Another alternative would be a kayak, preferably a sit-on-top. Look e.g. at www.globalflyfisher.com for Martin Joergensen's adventures with a sit-on-top.

I had considered a pontoon boat, however I like to take a friend or two when I go, and the two man pontoons are out of my price range.

As said, a good tandem canoe will be quite expensive too.

I like the
idea of a canoe for its portability, I can throw it on top of my explorer
with little preparation.

Very true.
