Hello Everyone,
I'm back from afew days running around the various Forks of the Kern River Drainage & it's tributaries targeting the Various NATIVE SPECIES ofg TROUT to be found there.... A Great time as always...
Took a Customer Friend of mine to target 3 of the NATIVE species for a contest the DFG is offering; goes something like this:
Catch & Release , With of course you taking photos of & documenting where you caught it, 6 California Native Trout Species. You submit the Photos & Information/ documentation to the DFG & you will recieve a Limited edition Joe Tomelleri Print of all the California Native Species.....
We went after & did trick with our flies the following:
KERN RIVER REDBAND (Rainbow)......... (O. Mykiss Gilberti)
LITTLE KERN GOLDEN..........................(O.Aquabonita Whitei)
SOUTHFORK KERN GOLDEN..................(O.Aquabonita)
Nothing too big as we were fishing mostly small brushy creeks...my favorite stomping grounds for Trout!!!!! However we fished the Forks of the Kern and my friend caught about a 10 inch Kern River Redband (Rainbow).... If only the North Fork Kern had dropped down below it's current C.F.S. we'd have had better conditions hunting the Redbands(Rainbows).
I also introduced my friend, Randy, to the intense activity of fishing small Brushy Streams... Randy has always fished the Bigger, more Open, well written about waters of California. He had no idea how High Intensity Small Brushy Streams can be.... He had to learn to be Stealthy & silent in one's approach. he had to learn about short controlled casts into small windows between, or underneath the Streamside brush-trees.... He had a time at it .... Scared plenty of trout, got frustrated when the wind would screw up everything.... Couldn't see his fly in the play of Shadow and light... BUT, he came away with a strong desire to learn this entirely new area of flyfishing for him. As he stated "watching you sneak up on a fish, survey the situation, line up for your cast & then drop the fly in the right spot... Seeing the Golden move up & take the fly. That is encouragement in itself".... Randy has abit to do as I've been at this Small Brushy stream game for 15 years at least.... He'll do just fine I'll say....
Anyway everyone, I'm back on the List.... Happy Fourth of July to the VFB family....
The Kern River Drainage ROCKS!!!!!!!!
