Have you tried tying with them while they are still wet (slightly damp)?   I
heard that somewhere also but I can't remember where.   It would seem to me
that they would turn brittle again when dry but I was working with spey fly
feathers so you would have the ribbing over it to secure it also.
Sorry again about the bike.   Maybe you will find a new one you like
better..
