As Hans once said of humpies- proportions, proportions, proportions.

That is true of all flies.  There a lot of guidelines on proportions, but
when a fly is right, it just looks right.
I always use a hackle wrapped a couple of times around the front of the
finished fly to see if I like the proportions of the hackles vs. the fly
rather than just the hook.
