DonO - 

I've seen this behavior in the past and the problem has been malfunctioning
memory.  All of Jerry's maintenance advice is very good to pursue.  Make sure
that overheating is not an issue.  But mainly, get your guru to swap out RAM as
a test.  If there are multiple memory cards in your machine it may not be
necessary to replace all of them.
