I've had them fail on big fish.  Maybe I didn't do it right, but ...

I still use loop-to-loop, but I either use Lefty Kreh's method of a radical diagonal cut on the end of the line, whip finished back to itself, or the Joe Robinson/Dave Whitlock version of strippiing down to the braid and inserting it back into the covered line with superglue.  (Joe Robinson, Dave's coauthor of the method, is a longtime fixture at fly shops here in Austin.)
