Subject: Re: [VFB] Specialty Fly lines
Hi Tom,
The two items that I would add to this discussion are both short head weight
forward lines. The first I use in salt water, and it is the SA redfish line.
It has a rather short head, and will fire a clouser or crab pattern anywhere
from 30 feet to 70 feet with a single false cast. ( 7wt- 10 wt)
Redfish will generally give you one shot, and if they see or
sense the line in the air, they will disappear. It is very important that
you lift, load and fire with as little false casting is possible. This
line does the task very well.
The second line I am using is the Clearwater weight forward line from Orvis.
Not really much of a specialty wine except that it again has a short head.
And I use it for most of my freshwater fishing, generally done with the
three weight or four weight. I target bass and bream.
I was actually looking for a better line for my purposes, than the lines
that I have been using in freshwater. Joe Cornwall, turned me onto the
Clearwater line. They have been on sale at Orvis for $10.
I am usually throwing wet flies: a Birds Gillbuster or a weighted woolly
bugger. If they are hitting top water, I am throwing whatever Steve
Davenport has sent me recently. His DP poppers are fabulous, and a tad wind
resistant. So either way, I like I like the shorter head, because with my
fast action rods. I can usually get the fly to where I want it with a
minimum of false casting.
