Daytar quit making new products when Steve Jobs pulled the rug out from under them by cancelling the Mac Clone licensing project. The company lived on for a while selling their existing stock of upgrade cards and also doing repairs. Shreve Systems bought a load of DayStar stuff a couple years ago but they just recently got out of the computer business. (They were always way too high on their prices for Mac parts. Used to have a ton of Apple Lisa stuff too.) I suppose DayStar decided to discontinue the Value 040 in favor of pushing a trimmed down product line. Before the IIci was released, DayStar made customized 030 upgrades for almost every model of Mac. With the advent of the IIci they standardized on the 030 PowerCache which also fit directly into the IIvi, IIvx and Performa 600 plus all the other Macs they had indvidual upgrades for, using various adaptors. Including the LC with it's 020 and most of the LC and Performa series with an LC PS. And, if my PowerCache manual is to be believed, they even could shoehorn the PowerCache into the Classic, Color Classic, SE and LCIII. Those adapters came with their own manuals, which I don't have. The Turbo 040 fits most of the Macs that the 030 PowerCache does. The Turbo 601 probably fits everything the Turbo 040 does. For Macs with a stock 040 CPU, the upgrade choices were the Power Pro which fit in the PDS and the Power Card which plugged into the 040 CPU socket then the 040 plugged onto the Power Card. The Power Card was for 040 Macs with an LC PDS. So I'm assuming the Value 040 got the axe to push customers either towards the Turbo 040 or Turbo 601 for their 030 powered Macs. How much did you get hit in the wallet for those Value 040 boards? I know someone with a Performa 550. :) ===== "If knowing is half the battle, why aren't all battles half as long?" __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
