 Hi,

A friend just gave me a Mac Plus. It came with an external HD. First
I tried to start from a floppy. So I inserted over a half a dozen
startup floppies, all 800k or 400k with several different System
versions, from 4 to 6.0.8. All floppies were expelled, preceded by
question mark and with an "X" mark afterwords. Then I conected the
external drive and started. Question mark again. I don't know if the
pRAM can be zapped or if this is a valid procedure on this model, and
if it can, how to do it. So I turned it on and pressed the zap keys.
I did something different. It showed a blank floppy icon first, then
the screen went black and then the floppy icon came back with the
question mark. I kept holding the keys but nothing else happened. The
 blinking "?" continued.

Since none of the startup floppies I used worked, I'm wondering
whether there is a Plus model-specific startup disk...

The problem's gonna lie in a dirty or malfunctioning floppy drive. If you can get one, replace the floppy drive. OR, dismantle the existing one partially and clean and lube it.

The external may not fuction due to damage to the System Folder.

Thank you Jeff,

I'll clean the drive first. If it doesn't work, I have a couple of 800k floppy drives from an SE. Would it be OK to use them?

As for the external drive, I tried another external drive I have, which is connected to a Mac IIsi, system 6.0.8 installed. I tried it, but did not work either. This one has four partitions, but only one has a valid System Folder. The IIsi starts up from it without problems.
