If the drive is an old one, contemporary with the Plus, it'll need formatted with 3:1 interleave. SCSI Director 1.7.2 can do that (also 2:1 for the SE and 1:1 for "other"), I dunno if Apple's formatter does the different interleaves for the Plus and SE. The SCSI on the Plus is slow, slow enough that even the relatively slow early SCSI drives would move consecutive sectors past the heads before the Plus would be ready to read or write. 1:1 numbers the sectors consecutively, 1,2,3,4,5,6... 3:1 renumbers the sectors so that after the first sector occupied by a file is read or written, the next sector that's coming to the head will have a higher chance of being the next one in sequence by the time the slow SCSI controller is ready to read or write again. The secret to good disk performance with a Plus or SE on a slow, old drive is to keep it defragmented so the files will be arranged in sequential block order to match the interleave. Put a 1:1 drive on a Plus and much of the time the drive will be making three rotations per read or write operation. That's not such a big deal if you connect a modern drive spinning at 4500 or faster RPM with a fast track to track and full stroke seek time. ===== It's total Fandemonium! http://www.fandemonium.org __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
